It’s time for Halloween again, a holiday custom made for cosplay if there ever was one, at least the way it’s celebrated in the United States. Even though most of us in the US associate Halloween with kids wearing costumes and going trick-or-treating for candy, the practice of wearing costumes is fairly recent historically. According to the Wikipedia entry on Halloween, wearing costumes or masks didn’t really occur until 1900. It was only in the 1950s that Halloween masks started being mass produced and the holiday changed to what we know it as today. In the 1990s companies started to commercialize Halloween even further and started selling more, and more varied, decorations in addition to costumes and masks.

Cosplay, shortened from Costume Play, is associated with dressing up in costumes like anime/manga/videogame characters, or at least this is the way most anime/manga fans outside of Japan define it. In Japan cosplay happens at quite a few events throughout the year, but cosplayers do not limit themselves to only manga/anime/videogames characters but cosplay as characters from movies as well. In the US most cosplay takes place at the numerous anime conventions that occur throughout the country each year.

However, Halloween certainly offers the opportunity to cosplay and with Halloween a popular holiday on college campuses I was wondering how many of you out there are planning to cosplay for Halloween? To that end I’ve got a poll that I’d like everyone to vote on over on the sidebar. I’d also like to hear from everyone about their cosplay plans, are you going to a party, going to be doing some trick-or-treating, or something else? Please leave a comment and let us all know!
LOL I want to whip out my P-I-M-P costume, but I have no idea where it went. Instead, I’ll go out with friends and have dinner or something. I hate being at home and hearing the constant door-bell rings.
I was originally going to go with a Suzumiya Haruhi hairband + white button-down shirt + black pleated skirt + matching overcoat + red studded collar + black leggings + black knee-high socks + kiddie winter boots combination, but after trying everything on, I’d realized that the collar was too small and the boots looked out of place, so I’ve replaced them with a bow matching my hairband and traditional black outdoors school shoes (think Akira Toya’s, from Hikaru no Go). I plan to do a quick photoshoot (all by myself…yep…no one appreciates this…) and post the photos on my website after some severe photoshopping, to censor the eyes probably.

Hi, I really love the pic of haruhi and gang. I have no desire to use the image on my own site (which I don’t have) but I would love to make that image into a puzzle with my puzzle software. Please let me know and send me the image if I can use it. I just watched haruhi at otakon and it is hard to find images as it is a relatively new anime. Thank you very much.
